When to schedule your session?
If you have a due date, you can pay the retainer fee to secure a spot for a newborn session =) Since I am usually booked a few months in advance, I recommend securing your spot by the second trimester. I occasionally have last minute openings, contact me for availability.
Once the baby is born and you are home and settled, we will schedule the session. I prefer to do newborn sessions within two weeks of birth. During this time, babies tend to be sleepier and much more tolerant of poses. There are circumstances that sometimes prevent the session during the preferred time frame; we will work together to accommodate these situations.
Newborn sessions take place during the week between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
What can I do to prepare for the session?
After I receive your retainer, I will send you a questionnaire that will help me plan the details of your session.
Newborn sessions take place in your home. The sessions lasts approximately three hours (sometimes less). I will not rush your session, I want baby comfortable at all times. Feeding breaks are welcome at any time.
Your questionnaire will help me to bring the appropriate props for your desired photos. I need adequate natural light and a clear work area to set up.
It is important for your home to be warm and cozy. I will provide a space heater to keep your baby comfortable during the session.
Please feed baby 2-3 hours before the session, and again approximately 30 minutes before my arrival. It is important to keep baby awake before my arrival, so that they are sleepy when I arrive.
Have baby dressed in light clothing, something with buttons rather than an outfit that has to be pulled over their head.
It is important to follow these tips as closely as possible in order for the session to flow smoothly.
During your session
If you choose to take family photos, these can take place anywhere in your home, as these photos are more of a documentary style. Some of the most common places are the nursery or parents room. For clothing, I suggest neutrals. Moms, I suggest taking a few moments that morning to pamper yourself for your first professional photo with baby. Family photos are always encouraged but not obligatory. For sibling photos, keeping it simple is key. I never want to force a child into a photo. A small kiss for baby, a little touch, those all create meaningful images just as much as a “posed” photo.
From here I will begin setting up my work space and creating “stations” so that each set flows into the other. Depending on your questionnaire we will transition from family photos to something of your own or I will start with my own choices.
I will handle your baby with the utmost care. I will soothe, swaddle and ensure that baby is kept happy.
It is my hope that you thoroughly enjoy the session. It is an honor to be invited into the home of my clients and capture these precious moments.
